Educational Development Committee

This committee seeks to promote and enhance the educational values of youth within the Long Beach community. The Educational Development committee offers various events, programs and activities to encourage and support our future leaders of tomorrow.

OUR PROGRAMS

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors attending Long Beach Unified School District schools or who have actively participated in our Delta GEMS program. Graduating seniors must be accepted into a four-year college or university. (Click here for 2006 Scholarship Application)

DELTA ACADEMY

The Dr. Betty L. Shabazz Delta Academy emerged as a National program seeking to nurture and develop young African America females (ages 11-14). The academy provides an opportunity for members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to use their occupational skills and resources to help develop local leaders of tomorrow. Specifically, the participants learn about sisterhood, scholarship, service, math, science, and technology. Through our mentor component the participants receive hands on encouragement and support.

Our Delta Academy actively participates in several public service activities and events such as Delta Youth Days in Sacramento, UNCF Walk-A-Thon, Christmas gift wrapping, attending city council meetings and attending the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. National Presidential Academy.

ADOPT-A-SCHOOL

The chapter has adopted Barton Elementary School. The committee annually hosts and essay contest for all fifth graders to participate in during Black History Month. Contest winners receive monetary prizes for 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place.

FINANCIAL AID & SCHOLARSHIP WORKSHOP

Prior to college application deadlines the committee hosts a FREE financial aid and scholarship workshop. Various speakers give presentations on how to apply for financial aid, how to save for college, and where and how to look for scholarships. This year we will be hosting our workshop in collaboration with Academic Up-Rise, Inc. and the Long Beach Unified School District.
